Notes and observations:

There is a modern brass plaque attached to the bottom of the shaft and it bears the inscription:

THIS CROSS WAS BROUGHT FROM

FRANCE AFTER THE 1914-1918 WAR

BY THE REVEREND W.R. HARTLEY

THE THEN RECTOR OF BARNBURGH.

IT HAD BEEN PLACED ON THE GRAVE

OF HIS SON W.I.S. HARTLEY.

HE GOT PERMISSION FROM THE WAR

GRAVES COMMISSION TO BRING HIS

SON’S CROSS TO THE CHURCH AND

PLACED IT IN THE CHANCEL OVER

THE SEAT IN THE CHOIR STALLS

WHERE HIS SON SAT BEFORE

JOINING THE FORCES.
