Locations listed alphabetically by county

This is based on a rough list we put this together as a starting point based on an updated and corrected version of one created by the Western Front Association in the 1980s. There were originally over 300 hundred locations listed here, now there are over 550 thanks to the hard work of our volunteers research. Some contain one Battlefield Cross others multiples with as many as 22 in one location. There is a possibility that some of them don’t contain a Grave marker at all, although we think most of them do at present. It is worth checking on Google, War Memorial Online or via the IWM database to make sure, although all are also incomplete and have some incorrect data and locations. You can also work ahead and contact the church or organisation and see what they know and also check access.

There are others too, but these have yet to be checked to try and avoid too many wild goose chases. This list will expand as and when more come to light, we will also add other data to the locations with time, we have also started to geolocate them you can find the map here.

These provide a good starting point to get out and start looking. The Survey Guide is here which gives a rough idea of how we want to build the data set. But remember it’s also about your experience and trying to build and become part of the story that surrounds these memorials.

Please let us know once you have been to a location and what you find. Also let us know if you see or hear of anything new. You can email us on info@thereturned.co.uk.

If it’s marked in Red means it’s live with a link, Grey indicates someone is surveying it or the survey is complete. If it’s pale blue it’s been loaned out, moved or we’re not sure where it is, you can help by checking. Lilac indicates it’s possibly or is Second World War, Boer War or other.

Don’t let survey statuses put you off a visit many of these churches and buildings have a fascinating history wrapped around them, these crosses are part of, plus you may see things other people have missed.

If you are planning a visit to record a location, please let us know first if possible to prevent us doubling up.

Thanks all!
