Mounting to wall: Nailed or screwed to the wall
Detailing: Plain but raised carved letters.
Evidence of use in field: None
Surface insertion depth (if apparent): ditto
Finish (varnish, paint, oiled, unfinished etc): Plain, no finish
Condition: Very good

Notes and observations:
The cross is of the type commonly used in France, but it doesn’t show any marks that could be attributed to GRU work.
The pair of crosses are mounted either side of a small porch at the entrance to the church. There is a marble plaque mounted between the two crosses, with the words:
THIS PORCH WAS BUILT A.D. 1917 TO THE GLORY OF GOD & IN LOVING MEMORY OF TWO FRIENDS
The left hand panel has the badge of the Scots Guards in the top left corner and bears the words:
WILLIAM GILBERT HOULDSWORTH LIEUT 1ST BATTN SCOTS GUARDS DIED 23RD SEPT 1914 FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED AT THE BATTLE OF THE AISNE 13TH SEPT AGED 23 SON OF THE REVEREND WILLIAM THOMAS HOULDSWORTH & OF EULALIE HIS WIFE BELOVED REST IN PEACE
