I live localy to this church and find it amazing that so many crosses were brought back to Byfleet after the war, I was wondering how this happened, I can only imagine this was with the churches undertaking with CWGC or were these given to the church by the next of kin?
I do own a brothers medals and memorial death plaques issued to all next of kin after the war for the Ralph brothers, the brother with a known grave is listed here.
You are welcome to use them if you wish in your research.
I have recently been to St Mary’s Byfleet it only seems open on Sunday for service which I attended. Although they have a wonderful collection of about 22 crosses of varied designs carrying the names of 30 servicemen and some of these crosses still hold the mud in which they were placed. I was honest as to why I visited the church but was given very little time to photograph the crosses and indeed some were blocked off by a lighting gantry so was unable to see or photograph them clearly . My interest was initially with Cpl E.G.Morrish S/No.3882 buried with others of the (Artists) Rifle Brigade but he also served with the 11th Battalion Queens Own Royal West Kent Regt. I have just found your wonderful site and if you wish I will post what I have even though I hope to go back and complete my mission and record the sacrifice of these servicemen and women.
