Locations listed alphabetically by county

This is based on a rough list we put this together as a starting point based on an updated and corrected version of one created by the Western Front Association in 2008. There are over 300 hundred locations listed here, some contain one Battlefield Cross some as many as 22, there is a possibility that some of them don’t contain a Grave marker at all, although we think most of them do at present. It is worth checking on Google, War Memorial Online or via the IWM database to see, although all are also incomplete and have some incorrect data and locations.

There are others too, but these have yet to be checked to try and avoid too many wild goose chases. This list will expand as and when more come to light, we will also add other data to the locations with time, which will enable us to map them with geodata.

These provide a good starting point to get out and start looking. The Survey Guide is here which gives a rough idea of how we want to build the data set. But remember it’s also about your experience and trying to build and become part of the story that surrounds these memorials.

Please let us know once you have been to a location and what you find by emailing us on info@thereturned.co.uk. Also let us know if you spot or hear of anything new. You can email us on info@thereturned.co.uk.

If it’s marked in Red it’s already been surveyed, Maroon means it’s live with a link, Orange indicates someone will be surveying it. Green has had some information submitted but needs a full survey. If it’s pale blue it’s been loaned out, moved or we’re not sure where it is (you can help by checking. Don’t let either put you off a visit many of these churches and buildings have a fascinating history wrapped around them, these crosses are part of, plus you may see things other people have missed or what you may find.

Key to the list

Black – Not yet surveyed, feel free to get stuck in!
Maroon – Survey completed and live (link)
Grey – Survey completed
Blue – Uncertain provenance, lost or missing
Orange – Being surveyed
Lilac – WW2 (we aren’t at this stage covering these, but please feel free to survey them)

Initials is brackets (where noted) indicate who has volunteered to survey and report on each site.
