1914-1918   THIS CROSS TEMPORARILY MARKED THE GRAVE OF AN UNKNOWN BRITISH SOLDIER ON THE WESTERN FRONT AND IS ENTRUSTED TO YOUR CARE BY THE IMPERIAL WAR GRAVES COMMISSION

Cross beam width: 415mm

Width of wood:  60mm

Thickness or depth:  21mm

Mounting to wall: Small brass mounting plate recessed into rear face.  Hung on church wall.

Detailing: None

Evidence of use in field (earth marking, cracking, staining, shrinkage):  Chipped and flattened at top where hammered into ground.  Soil embedded in point.

Surface insertion depth (into ground if apparent): Not apparent.

Finish (varnish, paint, oiled, unfinished etc):   Unfinished.

Condition (cracked, paint peeling, woodwork, damage etc):  Some cracking.

Notes and observations:

Made of hardwood – possibly oak.  Properly jointed at intersection, plus 4 nails.

Cross is taken down for Remembrance Day Services and placed at the foot of the War Memorial in church.
